Blogger (Blogspot) CMS

There are so many advantages of using Blogger, it's almost ridiculous. In my opinion, the biggest benefits are unlimited storage and traffic (hosting), followed by the option of using your own domain name. There is no other company offering this whole package for free. Heck, even if you pay for hosting it will still not be unlimited. Not to mention traffic limitations.

What is Blogger

Blogger is a platform (from Google) that helps you create blogs and websites. You could also call it a publishing tool. You can publish information, your thoughts, ideas, pictures, videos and everything in between. It's ridiculously easy to use and get started with. If you know how to write and send an email then you will feel right at home with Blogger.

Google has over the years improved Blogger and its interface, with the last update dating back to 2020. Although over the years Google has retired products and services it no longer deemed profitable or feasible to maintain, this has not happened to Blogger. And for good reason: Blogger is profitable (in my opinion). To this day, creating a blog or website on Blogger is the easiest way to get accepted into the AdSense program.

Advantages of Using Blogger

  1. It's intuitive and easy to get started with;
  2. It's free with no strings attached and no paid upgrades;
  3. It has a long history (since 1999);
  4. It's offered by Google, a reputable company that will not disappear overnight;
  5. You can create up to 100 websites;
  6. It offers unlimited storage and traffic. Yes, unlimited;
  7. It's un-hackable bar someone guessing your password;
  8. You get a sub-domain for free: example.blogspot.com;
  9. Or use your own domain name, also for free: example.com;
  10. It's versatile.

Disadvantages of Using Blogger

  1. Strict Content Policy (rules);
  2. If you break the rules and people report you, your site may be deleted;
  3. If you keep breaking the rules you could get your entire Google account deactivated.
Looking at the advantages and disadvantages it's clear where the balance sides. But don't be quick to start creating sites before you read the Content Policy. These rules are easy to comprehend. There is no lawyer talk or anything like that. They are clear and there is little ambiguity.

My best advice is: do not publish things that upset or divide people. Stay away from sensitive issues and you will be fine. Don't make fun of people. Don't upload pictures or videos that are not yours. Don't copy and paste text from other sources without at least giving some commentary or substantially modifying it first. Be original and create your own content.

What's Possible with Blogger

There are a number of different website types one can build using Blogger. First, obviously, you can create a blog. On point #10 of the Advantages of Using Blogger I mentioned it's versatile. That means you can build a lot of different types of projects using this platform. Now you will find out what I mean.

#1 Start your own Blog

Starting a blog is the main purpose of Blogger. What is a blog? Here's a definition from the Oxford Dictionary:
a regularly updated website or web page, typically one run by an individual or small group, that is written in an informal or conversational style.
Firstly, a blog is a website. Secondly, it's regularly updated. Lastly, it is run (updated) by only one person or a small group.

A personal blog can be used for a variety of things, such as sharing your thoughts and ideas with others, documenting your personal experiences, and sharing information about your interests and hobbies. Many people use their personal blogs as a creative outlet, a way to connect with others who share their interests, or a platform to share their expertise on a particular subject. Some people also use their personal blogs to promote their businesses or professional services. Overall, a personal blog can be a great way to express yourself and connect with others online.

Here are some examples of famous people that have their own blogs and update them regularly:
  • Bill Gates (www.gatesnotes.com)
    • The founder of Microsoft, writes something new on his blog almost every week. As you can see from the articles that he posts (blog posts), he likes to read a lot and thus shares his thoughts on his favorite books by using his personal blog. He also posts about healthcare, the climate and equality.
  • Paulo Coelho (paulocoelhoblog.com)
    • The author of famous novel "The Alchemist", uses his blog to share his thoughts about writing, religion and some other interesting hobbies of his.
  •  Martha Stewart (www.themarthablog.com)

As you can see, even famous people enjoy writing and sharing their thoughts publicly with the world via their personal blogs. You can do it too. Now, you might not have the same-size audience as these folk but that shouldn't stop you. Writing is liberating. Putting your thoughts and opinions out there is almost therapeutic. You can also think about your blog as a journal, a public one though.
